HOMEWORK POLICY
In order for your child to succeed in third grade and on, it is important for him/her to develop good work habits. For this reason, I stress the importance of each student being responsible for his or her homework assignments. Every morning they are required to copy down homework assignments from the whiteboard and at the end of the day, we spend time going over what they need to bring home for homework. Often students are able to start their homework in class, so I know they understand the assignments before going home.
Please check and sign your child’s planner every night to make sure he/she is completing homework on a regular basis. If you see that an assignment in your child’s planner is highlighted, that means he/she did not turn it in. When your child completes the assignment I initial it so you know it was eventually completed. If you need to reference the guidelines, they can be found in your child’s planner on page 12.
Homework is an essential part of the learning process and is sent home Monday through Thursday. It helps to reinforce material covered in class. Homework is expected to be done by 7:55 the following day unless specified. On average, homework should take less than an hour.

Reading Log - PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD READS FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES AT HOME DAILY. WRITE DOWN THE NUMBER OF MINUTES READ ON THE CORRECT DAY IN THE PLANNER. YOU ONLY NEED TO WRITE DOWN THE MINUTES FOR MONDAY - THURSDAY NIGHTS.
Wednesday Communication Folder - This folder goes home with your child every Wednesday. It might be filled with corrected assignments, class or school information, and fliers for upcoming events. Please take out the papers that stay at home and sign and return any papers that need to be returned. PLEASE RETURN THIS FOLDER EITHER ON THURSDAY OR FRIDAY. This will help both of us to stay organized and communicating effectively and efficiently!
Starting soon...
Lucky Listener Club (LLC)- Lucky Listener is to help with fluency, accuracy, and expression. A few times a month a Lucky Listener poem or passage will be assigned on Monday and due by Friday. L.L.C. pieces need to be read aloud to at least 8 people. You can do it over the phone too! If there aren’t eight different people, one person can listen 2 or 3 times and sign the sheet 2 or 3 times. I also allow students time in class to read it to their classmates. This will make more sense when you see the paper.
Scientist of the Week - Each week one student will conduct a simple experiment for the class. The scientist of the week is responsible for demonstrating one science experience on MONDAY. The week before, the scientist will get a bag of books with ideas for experiments, but may chose any experiment he/she can perform on their own. The experiments will be done on Monday to give the scientist a chance to practice over the weekend. More information will be provided with the bag of books.
Vacation Words (V Word) - Every Monday, a vacation word will be assigned. A vacation word is an overused word that is going on “vacation” and cannot be used by students anymore. For homework, students need to come up with at least 5 BETTER words for the vacation word. Vacation words will be written in the planner in the spelling section. I have loaned each student a small thesaurus that will be kept in their homework folder to help them with this assignment. Students can also use whatever resources they have at home!
For example...
Vacation word: Good
Other words we can use: FANTASTIC, SUPERB, WONDERFUL, etc.
